The Market Hall is awarded the Green Flag Community Award
The glass-fronted Market Hall is now firmly part of the Borough Market furniture, playing host to various community events throughout the year, as well as being home to our demonstration kitchen and a variety of plants. Its modern structure has been designed to maximise horticultural potential, with vertical planters, trailing hops and moveable seating—visitors can often be found taking a seat and devouring whatever Market treat they’ve bought from one of our traders.
This unique public green space has, for the second year running, won the Green Flag Community Award, a national award that recognises high quality green spaces in the UK that are managed by voluntary and community groups. The award is part of the Green Flag Award scheme, the national standard for quality parks and green spaces.
The Borough Market team have worked hard to ensure this relatively small urban space delivers everything one would expect from a community garden.
Donald Hyslop, chair of Borough Market Trustees, said: “Our city garden in the Market Hall is now well established within the community, offering visitors a place to sit, eat, relax and chat. It’s also a great place to discover more about the Market and the food it sells. It is a place of exploration, where shoppers can experience seasonal produce and special events. We are delighted that this community space has been recognised in this way.”
